Every being according as they have purpose in their heart, so let them give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for Spirit loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Inclusiveness in Hoodoo
What does gender have to do with hoodoo? Nothing, really. If you are a hoodoo worker, you are a hoodoo worker. You are not a (insert gender) hoodoo worker; you are a hoodoo worker doing the work of deliverance with an ancestor, guide, or deity on behalf of a client or group or community that has requested it. As a hoodoo worker works with and uses the Bible in their toolbox as a spell book, the social ramifications and demands of having genders in the Bible necessitate a conversation about gender. This is because to be a successful and inclusive hoodoo worker, it is best to meet people where they want to be met. Not where you want to meet them or where you think they should meet you. This means understanding that language is important. If your client does not feel comfortable with certain gender references or deity references, then learn that before starting any session work.
Itâs like baking a cake (that now comes with negative connotations in the LGBTQIA community because of recent controversies involving discrimination by bakeries). When I bake a cake for someone, I want to bake one they like. So I will begin by asking them very simply, âWhat kind of cake would you like?â Then I listen, make sure I understand how to work with the ingredients that they request, and then I make the cake.
In hoodoo it is the same way. I worked with a client that wanted spell work that was inclusive of Hecate. I do not work or know much about this Greek goddess; therefore, I did research before our call. I first checked in with my ancestors and guides to see if they were comfortable with me doing this spell work. If they would have not allowed it, then I would have let the client know that I could not work on their deliverance request. Fortunately, my guides pretty much said, âGroovy,â and so off I went, learning what I could to respectfully integrate Hecate in the deliverance reading.
I love working with any client where our ancestors, guides, and deities collaborate. This means I work with anyone: Christian, Jewish, pagan, straight, polyamorous, gay, lesbian, atheist, socialist, conservative, independent, Indigenous, mixed race, cis, nonbinary, binaryâI have worked for and with them all.
The only person I will not work with is someone that my ancestors, guides, and deities say that I should not. Thatâs my boundary. Thatâs my line in the sand. You, too, will have your own line in the sand.
I do recommend that you have a couple of Bibles that are marked up for gender and deity: one that has gender-neutral pronouns and terminology and another that is deity-neutral. It just makes things more fluid and inclusive for you as a reader and healer. If you do not have a physical
